Expert Workshop held to harmonise fish monitoring programmes in the Wadden Sea
In November, the iSeal project, part of the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung (DAM) / German Marine Research Alliance, convened an expert workshop in Kiel, Germany, that brought together trilateral specialists from Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands to discuss harmonising fish monitoring across the Wadden Sea. Current monitoring programs vary widely in methods, geographic scope, and institutional roles, making collaboration challenging. The workshop aimed to develop strategies for aligning these efforts to strengthen conservation and management. Around 25 participants from research institutions, government agencies, and conservation organisations discussed:
Leveraging existing data to create indicators for sustainable fish stock management.
Identifying gaps in knowledge and adapting monitoring to better support conservation goals.
Using social network analysis to map institutional relationships and overcome barriers to cooperation.
The outcomes are intended to guide standardised approaches and improve data integration across borders, fostering trilateral collaboration between Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Swimway is an official partner of the project and experts from Expert Group Swimway work closely within this project.
